Ed and Laurie Maas, owner of The Orleans Waterfront Inn, have been selected by Orleans Chamber of Commerce to receive a Build a Better Mousetrap Award from Cape Cod SCORE at its fourteenth annual awards breakfast at Old Yarmouth Inn. In spite of its history and its great location on the Town Cove the Orleans Inn had been in and out of bankruptcy for years and was in foreclosure and was ready to be razed. Seeing the potential Ed and Laurie Maas bought it from the bank in 1996. He oversaw the renovations and reopened the on May 15, 1997. The Orleans Historical Society presented them the award for preserving a historic structure.
The Inn has also received numerous awards from various local charitable groups. Ed serves on the board of the Cape & Islands United Way and has received numerous awards for the many philanthropic organizations he has helped over the years. He received the City of Hope Humanitarian Award as well as many professional and civic recognition awards. Working together the Maas Family has turned an abandoned, bankrupt business into one now rated in the top 10 performing hotels nationwide as recognized by Lodging Hospitality Magazine.
Top honors at the SCORE awards breakfast go to the Small Business Owner of the Year who is selected from among the counseling organization’s small business clients. Various chambers of commerce select those who receive SCORE’s Build a Better Mousetrap Awards which this year will go to seventeen small businesses that have survived the critical first five years of operation and appear to be headed for long-term success.
